circumstances, saying, he's the one who can get things "cooking again." i believe this is a defining election. defining for the nation, but also defining for your family. and i say that because, it will make a difference this election will. a difference for the nation, a difference for the families of america. and a difference for your own family. >> today, romney will spend the entire day on the stump in the pivotal battleground states of ohio. drumming up support there. if he does take ohio, takes the election, he'll become the first republican challenger to didn't election without winning ohio. >> obama still up by five points in ohio, encouraging to the campaign. still so tight in so many states. a nail biter of an election everyone knows that. the way it is looking, romney is doing very well among white men. the president is doing very well among women and hispanics. that's why you see emphasis on the ground game, getting those supporters out to the polls.

the 10-year-old's family has been waiting for. >> we have made an arrest in the jessica ridgeway case. 17-year-old austin sigg is in our custody. >> reporter: austin sigg a community college student arrested wednesday morning at this a home near ketner lake not far from where jessica's body was found earlier this month. she vanished on october 5th while walking to school. >> we're all worn out, everybody in the family is worn to a frazzle. >> reporter: jessica's family watched for three weeks as police searched for evidence in nearby fields and parks. detectives say it was a phone call that led them to sigg. they're thoroughly searching his home and impounded this vehicle. >> we hope and pray that this arrest gives them some measure of closure. >> reporter: investigators are linking sigg to an attempted abduction five month as go near the same lake. a jogger told police a man grabbed her from behind but she escaped. this bizarre clue, a small wooden cross was also found at

one of the crime scenes. in the past, detectives thought it belonged to jessica's killer. but didn't reveal any new details abut the cross they are charging sigg with five criminal counts for both cases. >> charges will be filed within the next couple of days. and then we start a different process. >> reporter: police say this is just the beginning in a long process seeking justice for jessica. sigg is to make his first court appearance this morning. rob, paula. >> a missing little girl from missouri is safe after being rescued from a convicted sex offender. an amber alert had been issued for 5-year-old abigail berthoff after she was kidnapped from her home. police spotted the adorable girl in the sex offender's car at the stoplight. they say she appeared unharmed but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. thank god for amber alerts. >> a happy ending for once to one of the stories. financial news this morning, asian stocks are mostly higher

today on positive signs about the economy in china. markets in the u.s. were calm yesterday after the steep selloff the day before. the dow was down 25 points. there was a bright spot though, facebook had its best day since its stock market debut back in may. makes our producer jack very happy. also, many facebook employees who were rich on paper will have real wealth now. today their so-called restricted stocks units convert into stock. with a cash value of $5.2 billion. the shares will remain locked up until monday. owners can then cash in by selling them on the stock market. enjoy all that green. facebook. book lovers across the country are checking their accounts after the startling security breach at barnes & noble. >> little did they know they swiped their credit card at the largest bookstore chain, tech savvy thieves were swiping their personal information. here's abc's pierre thomas.

>> reporter: barnes & noble, the victim of a massive sophisticated scheme, targeting credit and debit cards. thieves went after pin pads, we use to swipe our credit and deb yit cards for purchases. 63 stores in nine states were hit. affecting potentially thousands of customers. each time a purchase was made, the pin pad, beamed the private financial information to the crooks. crooks could withdraw money from bank accounts and make unauthorized credit purchases. >> scary. >> i am worried. >> reporter: we went to stores in new york and california. pin pads were gone. barnes & noble was so concerned it took pin pads out of 700 stores nationwide. it is unclear how thieves infiltrated the stores. what is clear ominous potential for thieves to run up thousands in purchases ruin credit and steal customer identities. >> they have to now monitor their credit reports. they have to monitor their bank statements. >> reporter: authorities warn

too good for your waistline. as abc's dr. timothy johnson reports. wake up. >> reporter: nearly one third of americans report getting less than six hours of sleep a night. and over 35% of americans are obese. a study in the journal of academy of nutrition and dietetics suggests there may bea connection. reviewing previous studies, researchers examine the effects of partial sleep defined as 4 to 6 hours of sleep a night on hormone levels in the blood and on hunger levels and eating habits. they found that partial sleep deprivation may cause you to eat more overall, put you at risk of overeating in the evening, and increase your intake of foods high in dietary fat. the authors recommend evaluating sleep patterns, and trying to get enough sleep regularly for those trying to manage their weight. i'm dr. timothy johnson. >> mm. oh, yeah.

white house as the clock ticks president obama getting one vote he can count on. making a stop in chicago to cast his ballot early. mitt romney is focusing on all-important state of ohio. abc's karen travers has more. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning, rob and paula. the final sprint to the finish line is under way. yesterday was the busiest day on the campaign trail yet with both candidates out there in the battleground states trying to lock down support. contendersre kicking it into high gear. >> this is the first stop on our 48-hour fly-around, campaign marathon extravaganza. we are going to pull an all-nighter. no sleep. >> he is even taking "air force one" to florida. the president is delivering his closing argument. >> we have been through tough times over the past four years, we have been through tougher times before. we are always moving forward. that's why i am asking for your

vote. >> reporter: mitt romney has a closing argument. >> it doesn't feel like forward. it feels like backward. we'll take back the white house. >> reporter: a controversial comment from a republican senate candidate is causing the party and romney headaches. indiana republican, richard mourdock said a pregnancy that resulted from rape is something god intended. he says he believes rape is evil. >> if they came away with any impression other than that i truly regret it. >> reporter: romney's campaign disagrees with mourdock's origin original comment. both campaigns are still focused on the small number of remaining undecided voters. but at this point their strategy has also shifted to really shoring up their base and nailing down as many early votes as they can. rob, paula, back to you. we have seen the polls, the small shifts by small fractions. and these past few weeks have been like watching a political

tennis match pretty much. back and forth. the numbers that really count are those of course in the electoral college. abc's jake tapper explains. >> reporter: if obama hold traditionally democratic states and picks up just three battleground where polls show he has small lead, ohio, iowa and wisconsin, he wins. what's more he is also ahead in battleground nevada and new hampshire. now look at romney, these are the traditionally republican states. the ones he is expected to keep. he is slight low ahead in battleground. colorado, florida, virginia, north carolina. even if hes when all four it is not enough. obama still wins the electoral college. >> important to note here, even though the president is ahead in many of these states he still has the not crossed the 50% mark in most of them. that means there remains enoug undecided voters for either candidate to win. reinforces the fact of how tight this thing really is. really, eight, nine states as we have been saying for weeks now will make or break one man

either way. >> seems like, president obama is getting almost, unanimous support from the black vote and you look at mitt romney's numbers he has a 17-point lead among men, 15-point advantage for obama among women. 75% of hispanics polling for obama as well. it is amazing to think as tight as this is, it is going to come done to a couple thousand, maybe, less than 100,000 votes. >> yeah, we have seen this play out before. saw how tight ohio was in '04. florida debacle in 2000. >> hanging chads. >> hopefully won't see a replay. demographic, romney is seeing movement positively in his direction. one example, white men in particular those who lack a college degree. almost recent shifts. trust on the economy and perceived economic empathy. most of the movement, among that, that, white men, that is kind of why the demographic reason why romney has seen, you

know, so much momentum at his back since debate season started. but obama is still five points ahead, according to time poll in ohio obviously a critical state. but even that is still tight. >> like i said. >> crunching the numbers. >> we'll be here late into the morning on the 7th. to the global economy. asian stock markets are higher as investors kept their sights on upbeat news about china's economy. the dow was down 25 points after the huge selloff the day before. there were a few bright spots. facebook had its best day since the stock debut in may. bank of america is the latest financial institution to be sued over bad mortgages. federal prosecutors are looking for $1 billion in damages. but the suit could ultimate low recover much more than that. the law suit claims that after bank of america bought country wide it made bad loans and stuck taxpayers with the bill. the teenager arrested for

the abduction and murder of 10-year-old jessica ridgeway in colorado makes his first court aper a appearance this morning. a college student that lives less than a mile from the ridge way home. police are crediting the community for thousand of tips that they say were instrumental in making the arrest. >> and we hope and pray that this arrest gives them some measure of closure. in dealing with this horrible tragedy and loss that they have suffered. classmates of sigg say he is a smart student interested in forensics and mortuary science. earlier this year he won second placen a csi student competition. a manhunt currently under way near los angeles after a pair of shootings left three people dead and two others injured. the victims are believed to be members of the same family. three were shot at the family owned fire extinguisher business in downy. and the others at a nearby home. the survivors did not recognize

the gunman and he does not atpe to be a former employee or acquaintance. cocoa, florida is making sure people keep their underwear to themselves forcing them to pull up their pants. city council passed an ordnance declaring saggy pants illegal. it bans pants or shirts that hang below the waistline. starting in january, first time violators fined $25. then $50 for a second offense. $100 for a third. >> i vacationed in coco beach, florida, back in high school. >> keep your skirt up. >> kept my bikini top up, and bikini bottom up as well. >> then you saved some money. all right, some sad news for all of the detroit tigers' fans out there. >> whatever. >> including, paula faris to my left. >> a mild fan. >> oh, oh. >> because it is my home state.

abc's terry moran has this heavenly story. >> reporter: at the alexander home in lynchburg, virginia. grace is different now. evan alexander a harvard neurosurgeon who nearly died four years ago when a ferocious e-coli infection attacked his brain and plunged him into a coma for a week. brain scans that show the parts that give us consciousness, thought and memory were not functioning. >> should be a very rich network of them all through both side. yet we dent see that because they're all filled with pus. >> reporter: doctors gave him up for dead. after a week, evan alexander awoke, with a wondrous memory. did you go to heaven? >> yes. i was rescued by this beautiful spinning white light that had a melody, indescribably beautiful melody with it that opened up into a bright valley.

withdraw support for richard mourdock who claims pregnancies from rape are "something god intended." politicians backed away, senator john mccain, romney has condemned the comments but not withdrawn his endorsement so far. >> mccain has withdrawn his endorsement until he hears some form of apology from mourdock. interestingly enough -- you remember -- jeanne roe from roev wade, featured in a new tv ad, and she is pro-life. obviously wants to overturn roe v. wade. said it was the biggest mistake of her life. she of course is trying to endorse romney which is, an interesting perspective there from the woman who was pivotal in roe v. wade. >> absolutely. one of the hot button issues the country grapples with. that is a big issue that is on the line. fighting for the female vote. have to wonder women listening to the mourdock comments on top of the aiken controversy, and flip flopping, romney on abortion itself, how it plays out. you see the president pushing the issue of trust and consistency.

see how it plays out. >> romney unleashed the more moderate tone where he says "i'm not against abortion in the cases of rape, incest, life of the mother." and not going to get rid of birth control. trying to put that out there, taking more of a moderate approach. >> part of his big swing to the middle since the primary for sure. >> the other story we are following this morning, a major storm which soon could be bearing down on the east coast. >> it would result from the mix of cold air now in the west, and hurricane sandy whose effects are being felt in south florida. with more on sandy and the coming storm here is abc's sam champion. >> reporter: the 18th named storm of the season will cut across cuba and the bahamas before expanding in size as it blows towards the south florida coast friday morning. there are already tropical storm watches there. but where sandy goes next is a bit of an october surprise. it was last october when another storm system dumped more than a foot of snow on halloween.

many kids were forced to trick-or-treat in malls as their communities struggled with power outages. east coast power companies are already gearing up for sandy. another thing to keep in mind -- conditions this year are similar to october 1991. the year of the perfect storm. when hurricane combined with a huge cold weather system, the resulting storm killed 12 people and caused $200 million in damage. when a tropical system combines with a cold system we call it an atmospheric bomb, what happened in 1991, and what forecasters believe will happen at the end of this week or beginning of next week. the forecast models offer compelling reason for the east coast to stay on alert. sam champion, abc news, new york. >> i wasn't worried about the storm yesterday. this was the line in our evening editorial note. there is a consensus forming in weather forecast models, that hurricane sandy is unlikely to go out to sea. instead it will more likely merge with a strong fall cold front and transition into a

trades. prosecutors say gupta leaked information to a billionaire hedge fund owner netting them both huge profits at the very height of the nation's financial crisis. gupta will pay $5 million fine. bank of america the latest financial institution to be sued over bad mortgages. federal prosecutors are suing for $1 billion in damages. the suit could ultimately recover a lot more than that. the lawsuit claims that after bank of america bought countrywide it made bad loans and stuck taxpayers with the bill. if you watched an nfl game this month you have seen plenty of pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. and you are going to see even more sunday. >> not only will players and coaches continue to sport a little bit of pink. the officials in the dolphins/jets' game are going to be using pink penalty flags. >> go bears! >> the league agreed to them after an 11-year-old suggested the idea to commissioner roger goodell in a letter. the boy and his family will be at the game to present the pink flags.
